Philip III the Good

Philip III the Good
(1419-1467) (Philippe III le Bon)
   duke of Burgundy
Born in Dijon, Philip III the Good, duke of Burgundy, was the son of jean the fearless, duke of Burgundy, and Margaret of Bavaria. To avenge his father's assassination, he allied himself with the English and signed the Treaty of Troyes (1420), which disinherited the Dauphin (the future charles vii of France). After having fought against the Dauphin, however, Philippe reconciled and signed the Peace of Arras (1435), which gave him the towns of the Somme and the dispensation of vassalage for Flanders. Master of Burgundy, Franche-Comté, Flanders, Artois, and the Belgian provinces, he became one of the most powerful rulers in Europe. He suppressed personal freedoms but was considered a good administrator, as he created the General Estates, a court of justice, and a high council. Philip the Good was a patron of the arts, supporting a number of artists (van Eyck, ockeghem).
